SFA Counseling Internship Student
Supervised by Tina Rix, LMFT
Hello, my name is Kimberly Hernandez, and I am a current graduate student at Stephen F. Austin State University. I am working on my Master of Arts in Professional Counseling with a specialization in Clinical Mental Health. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Stephen F. Austin State University. I am fluent in Spanish and can translate/ interpret. I have extensive knowledge in career guidance and exploration, as well as professional development within higher education.
Part of my graduate degree has consisted of working in the Counseling Clinic at SFA. I was able to work with individuals and groups who were experiencing a variety of mental health concerns. Some of these concerns consisted of clients who struggled with relationship/ marital problems, communication challenges, difficulty creating and maintaining boundaries, low self-esteem, core beliefs, and managing symptoms of depression and anxiety. Therefore, my formal education and professional experience have prepared me to counsel individuals, couples, families, and groups.
My approach to therapy is based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, but there are many counseling approaches and techniques that can be utilized at any given time to meet each client’s specific needs. I believe that thoughts, behaviors, and feelings are all intertwined and that changing one can change the outcome of others. I believe in each person as an individual and believe each person has the capacity to work through and resolve their problem/ situation with assistance. I believe each person is capable of meeting their goals at their own pace; some may need only a few counseling sessions, while others may require more.
I look forward to meeting with you!
